The Class of 2009 has raised enough money for the first 5 bins! Better still, we have met President Maeda's challenge to raise at least $1,250 by the halfway mark and in return he will buy our 6th bin at the last Student Alliance meeting of the year on Wednesday, May 6 at 6 pm!
Thanks to the 3% of the class has given individually, as well as to the Architecture department, whose sizeable gift helped us reach this mid-term goal.
If you haven't made your gift, join President Maeda tomorrow night and you can make your gift together. As always you can give online (remember to write "Senior Gift" in the restricted gift line). And stay tuned here to keep up on our progress.

Hello friends,
ReplyDeleteJust a quick note that the link to give above is wrong. The correct link is: http://www.risd.com/giving/.
Good luck and hope you get lots of gifts!
Best from,
Liz
Yes Liz, it was wrong- thanks for pointing it out.
ReplyDeleteNow it is fixed. Thanks for giving!
I understand that one man's garbage is another mans ___ (treasure) but just a few quick questions:
ReplyDeleteWho's going to take care of all these bins and 'trash' after we graduate?
Is there a committee and an understanding by the incoming / younger students to keep the communal efforts of recycling?
Also if we donate materials (as most of us are graduating) do we get credit back or some sort of 'acknowledgment/ reward'?
As for those leaving only for the summer, when they return in the fall are they going to be able to pick out other materials similar to the value which they 'donated' or are to suppose to buy everything again?
I also posted this response on two.risdAnonymous 8:57pm :
ReplyDeleteThanks for the questions, they are all things that we have, and still need to think about for precisely the reasons you mentioned.
First, 2nd Life will be run as usual next year; although I am graduating, Marc Haumann and Jeremy Klemundt have been working with me all year, and things are transitioning smoothly.
Next, we have been working closely with facilities to set up this bin collection system, and the details will be clarified over the summer before it is implemented in the fall. Basically, these bins that we are gifting to the school will be located in all our buildings and monitored by 2nd Life volunteers during the week; then they will be collected regularly by facilities and emptied into 2nd Life. Regarding “credit” for the value of things donated, this is still something to work out, as it stands you would have to go to 2nd life to trade your things, and the bins would be for what is left over, or what would have been trashed otherwise. If you have specific ideas I encourage you to get in touch with us at 2ndlife-at-g.risd.edu!
I think “the communal efforts of recycling” are values that every class holds, not just those graduating this year. These bins are going to facilitate the process and allow everyone access to material scraps.
Everyone who donates money to the class gift will be acknowledged during commencement. But the intention of donating materials is that they are things you would have been getting rid of anyhow, rather than that they are pre-payment to get what you want in the fall. There is no simple way to keep track of that, so things donated now are just charitable giving to the next classes, as well as a necessary step to keep those things out of the dumpsters.
I hope that helped clarify the gift, please do ask more questions if you have them.
